Do you have fish in your aquarium? If you do, believe it or not, you can take beautiful pictures of the fish using a telephoto lens.

So just how does one do it?

First things first, set your photography equipment up. Before you start taking any pictures, just make sure that the tripod and the camera, as well as the light are located at the aquarium tank's top. Do not immediately take any pictures. Let the fish get familiar with the equipment first. This will help them relax and so shots taken of them will look natural and candid.

This ensures that your subject will appear clear in the final and developed picture.

The tank you are going to take pictures of should be well lighted. It is best that light be placed at the top of the tank. You need to be careful though when lighting is used in the water as electricity is involved. Make sure that the placement of the lighting is safe and secure to prevent any type of electric shock as this could prove to be fatal, both to the fishes as well as to the photographer.

It is also highly unadvisable to use your camera flash when taking pictures of aquarium fish. This is because the glare of the flash could give off a reflection or produce a shiny, glaring spot in the picture that could distract, if not ruin, the shot.

Focus, focus, focus

As much as possible, focus on the moving fish as it darts and swims across the water. It is during this time when you could determine the specific type of measurement, lens, aperture opening as well as shutter speed. Here is a good tip, if a fish is swimming towards you, try to increase the depth of field in your camera to create a much more focused and clear shot.

Your digital camera is the most important tool you will use when entering into a digital photography business. The quality of the images you produce will decide whether they are accepted or rejected by stock photo sites and I recommend you use at least a 5 mega pixel digital camera as well as making sure it is set to maximum resolution. This is a photography business tip worth considering before you invest in a digital camera.
So you need a photography business plan, because even though you may have thousands of photos to submit I advise you to never upload more than 50 photos at a time and be very careful not to submit the same photo twice as this may lead to photo rejection and, in some cases, even to account closure. To avoid sending duplicates I recommend that you not change the file name as your PC will point out any duplicates; however, once you have a batch to upload you should change the file names accordingly. Fortunately Windows includes software that allows you to change multiple file names with a few clicks of the mouse.
The second most important factor is keywords and by choosing the right keywords you can definitely increase your photo sales in your home photography business. There are a variety of tools you can use when choosing keywords, a simple search on the Internet will immediately give you half a dozen sites that will help you determine which keywords will work best. Another photography business tip would be to view similar images on Google Images and see which keywords are being used on the foremost images. Please note, keep your keywords between 8-10 per image to get the best results, if you use more than that they may be rejected as spam, and that certainly isn't the best way to start a photography business.
Remember, quality is key in a digital photography business to avoid your photos being rejected; clear, bright photos are a shoe-in. If you need to reduce the photo size you should use either Adobe Elements or Adobe Photoshop as both do a great job of resizing while maintaining photo quality. Be careful to not go over a 5% size reduction as the quality will be reduced significantly.
Lastly, if a photo was rejected once, don't resubmit it. Retake the shot, keeping quality at the forefront of your mind thereby ensuring they will accepted, and that will be the foundation the a successful home photography business.

Couldn't decide which I liked better so I uploaded both. Geese flew through my moon shot. I think they're geese anyhow. At the time I thought they were sandhill cranes but on viewing in the computer I think they're geese. Feel free to weigh in. ;-) There's swans in the neighborhood too, but these still look like geese to me. I love the way the slow exposure translated to a ghostly movement with these winged critters. A few people have asked about processing, so I thought I'd add that processing was minimal---just the stuff I normally do. A little levels, a little hue/saturation, a little sharpening. The color of the sky is natural, the moon and geese are too. The main difference I see between this and the "original" is that this one is a little more contrasty. The geese look the way they do because my shutter speed was slow--producing a motion blur effect.

Basic Of Digital Photography

For all you know, digital photography is a fun hobby and I know how exciting it is to be able to hold your digital camera in your hand and just follow the calling and go snap the pictures right away. And that is what goes wrong in most of the digital photography newbies.

You have got to read your manual first. I know it sounds boring and a lot of you would rather learn the features while you are taking pictures but do you know there are so many features in your digital camera that you can't possibly know by just taking pictures?

Now, without looking at your manual, can you tell me what the maximum ISO of your camera is? Do you know the lowest shutter speed for your camera?

Although your manual might say it all, it still explain to you the limitation of your digital camera and what you can expect from it. Another tip for you is that, the more expensive camera you bought, the more you need to read the manual before you start taking pictures. Surely you experience what a high end digital camera can do and I can tell you that you will be amaze by it. :-)

After you have read your manual, it is time you take your digital camera out for some actions. Go take more pictures, the more the better and it is better that you can take more pictures of the same subject. My personal advice is to take all pictures you can and don't delete the pictures. You can review them just don't delete them. Not yet.

Now, when your fingers are soar from pressing the shutter button, it is time you sit down and view your pictures in front of your PC (not view on your camera LCD screen as it is too small for you to notice the difference and it used up the power too).

So, among the pictures you have taken (for the same subject), which are the pictures that you like? Which are the pictures that tell you that you have done a good job that you have capture the spirit of your subject?

Then compare those pictures to those that you don't like. What is wrong with them? Is it the angle, the proximity or something in you that just don't feel right (is OK to let your feeling decide as you are still new in digital photography)?

My point is, even as a novice in digital photography, you know that something is wrong with your pictures and you prefer some of them over another. So, how do you always be proud of your work? Take a guess. I hope you got it right and it is certainly through more practice. I think this wouldn't be difficult looking at the enthusiasm you have for digital photography. :-)

The last basic digital photography tip for you to take home is to explore more about digital photography. It might be pure luck that you landed at my blog or you are strong follower of my posts and anyway, this should not be your final station for learning about digital photography.

There are more tips out there and there are more professional photographers out there who offer more tips then me. So, look in forums and search engines for more information about digital photography and of course do come back for more tips. :-)

Is it Time to Buy a New Digital Camera?

Technology is constantly changing and you will see new cameras after a few months. It is quite alluring to get the latest gadget and have fun with it. It is so exciting to feel the new camera in your hand, dissect the technology and show your picture to everyone you knows.

But do you really need to buy a new digital camera?

1. Upgrade

If you have been playing with compact digital camera for quite sometime and you feel something is missing, you should consider getting a DSLR camera. There are so many things you can do with a DSLR. You can change the lenses to wide angle lens to capture more of the landscape or capture the resting lions with a telephoto lens.

You can shoot your picture in RAW format so that you can fine tune your picture on the computer. You can control how you want to flash your subject so that they won’t appear too white on the picture. There are more exciting things that you can do with a DSLR camera than a compact digital camera.

2. Budget

This is the simplest reason whether you should or shouldn’t buy a new camera.

Manufacturers are introducing different camera for different market segment. Just look at the rate of compact digital camera launched annually. Can you ever own all of them?

Unless you can sell off your camera, or else you are wasting your money on something that you can’t fully appreciate.

3. Understand the technology

Before you really buy a new digital camera, you should have a look into the features and technologies of the new camera. What are the differences of the new camera compare to your current one?

If you want to buy a new camera simply because it has more megapixels, you need to think again.

You need to know whether the manufacturers have increased the image sensor size along with the increased of megapixels. This is because when more pixels are jammed in a small image sensor, you are more likely to get a noised picture as you increase your ISO.

To put it in simpler explanation, pixels will generate certain degree of noise when a photo is taken. This noise is going to be transmitted to the next pixel and so on resulting in a noised picture. When you have a larger image sensor, the pixels are loosely packed and so reduce the noise in the picture.

You really should do some research before you buy a new camera. The chances are you might not need the latest toy for your hobby.

Successful Senior Photography

Are you doing any senior photography? If not, you are losing out on a huge market for your photography business! Senior photography has become more and more popular, and is now viewed as a rite of passage. I know of many photographers who make nearly as much or more with seniors that they do with weddings! And if you ask me, senior portrait sessions are MUCH easier than weddings and other events.
Now, that being said, competition for the senior market can be stiff. But don??t be discouraged! There are plenty of seniors to go around and you have just as good of a chance at getting their business as the next guy. Here are some tips to get you started:
1. Get them talking about you. A good way to do this is to offer some free sessions. That??s right ?? free! Start out with kids you already know. Chances are you have a neighbor or a co-worker (if you still have a day job) who has a senior or will have a senior soon. OFFER THEM A FREE SESSION. Do a terrific job. Make them a nice album. Now, here??s the catch. In exchange for their free session and prints, they must show their photos to their friends and hand out your business card (or print up some wallets with their one of their images and your contact info). You could even offer them extra prints (or even a little cash) for every senior they refer to you. Oh ?? and you might want to stress to them to keep quiet about their free session, or everyone will ask to do this.
2. Offer group discounts. This is especially good for senior girls! This is where you give a special discounted price when 3 or more seniors come for a session at once. You can take some nice group shots and individuals. Do some in the studio and on location. It is fun for the seniors because they are with their friends, and profitable for you!
3. Offer great collages and composite images. These are very popular and are easily done with Photoshop. Also, placing proofs online for anyone with a password to see is a great idea! These will be shared with friends and other moms, who will give you a call to schedule their own session.
4. Allow freedom with ordering: in other words, don??t make them buy something they don??t want. Allow any pose and any size to be ordered.
5. Create slideshows for CD or online presentation. Make sure to include some cool royalty-free music for added impact.
6. Purchase a mailing list of households with seniors. You can find mail order list distributors online. Create a great postcard with some of your best images to mail out.
7. Create business cards especially for the senior market. Leave these at the mall, fast food restaurants, on cars at the Friday night football game, at your church, etc.

A Digital Camera - The Bottom Linecategory : Arts-and-Entertainment:Photography
When digital cameras first hit the news, I thought, ??Wow! Never to have to buy film again!?? This much has remained true, but it took ten years for digital cameras to come up to the quality performed by film cameras. At first, the pixels were too few to enlarge to 3 by 5 much less an 8 by 10 with any quality. Today, pixels are not a problem and every feature adorning the film camera is now available on a digital camera.
I spent many months researching the available models and weighing the cost versus the features until I came up with a digital camera that pleased me. The camera is the Konica Minolta Dimage A200. While some functions are not as sophisticated as their film cousins, the advantages far outweigh its short comings.
In 2004 a decent SLR costs from $900 to $1500. I use an SLR as a comparison because they are the only type camera that shows exactly what the lens sees. The K/M A200 sells for about $600. Its 8 megapixels allows enlargements up to 13 by 19 inches with a sharpness equal to a fine 35mm photo from an SLR. The features I like best are the manual zoom ring (motorized zoom controls are slow and cumbersome), the stabilization chip (which produces sharp images even with slow shutter speeds) and the control over white balance (even custom balances). Another terrific advancement is the flip out rotating LCD viewer. Never again will I be held to an eye level view. With computer enhanced perspective control, all angles are possible.
To be fair, there are a couple of areas that can be improved, but can be lived with. One is the delay after pressing the button to take the picture while the camera focuses and sets aperture and speed. It??s only a tenth of a second, but you??d better get used to it or you will miss your shot. A remedy is to take a series of pictures and pick the best one. Another is inherent in all digital cameras and that is the artifacts that appear in the image at higher ISO settings. Artifacts are like the grain in fast film that appears like little dots in the picture. If you use the slower ISO settings like 50 or 100 ISO, then the artifacts are practically invisible. If ISO 200, 400, or 800 are needed to get the picture, then additional processing through PureImage or similar software will solve the problem nicely.
A word about the lens is in order. A zoom range of 28mm to 200mm (35mm equivalent) covers just about any focal length an advanced amateur could need. No other 8MP EVF (electronic view finder) has this wide an angle. The lens is custom made for a digital camera and is very sharp edge to edge. Only a very slight barrel distortion (1%) is visible at the 28mm focal length. Some software can correct this if perfection is demanded. You never have to worry about dust getting on the CCD sensor since the lens is not detachable. If wider or more telephoto effects are needed, there are accessory lenses that will make the wide end 50% wider and the telephoto twice as long. The A200 also has a 4x digital zoom but I recommend that this only be used as a last resort since the number of pixels are halved when you double the zoom. The auto focus works very quickly except in extreme low light. A manual focus is available with a nice auto 4x enlargement of the center for critical focusing.
No Compact Flash card is included in the package, so I bought a 512 80x CF card for $69.00. The 80x refers to the fact that it unloads to your computer in a jiffy and the 512 Megabytes allows 81 pictures of the extra fine quality JPEG that I always use. The pop up flash lights up subjects at 12 feet away at 100 ISO. For more versatility I bought the Vivitar DF 200 slave flash ($69.00) that works to 50 feet at night.
This camera is a joy to use and has everything I could ever want in the way of features. In the six months I have owned it, I have created dozens of 13 by 19 images for the two Digital Art Shows I have had. Viva la digital generation!

1. Introduction:
If you have just picked up a camera for the first time, or have been taking pictures for years, the information contained in this guide will ensure that you do not overlook anything as you frame and shoot that picture. Taking your photographs to the next level, by using a few computer tools, no special filters, and free clip art, we will walk you through the steps to create a picture like the one on the cover of this book as easy as 1-2-3.
When displaying your vehicle at a show, enthusiasts like yourself pay close attention to every detail down to the shine on the bolts to ensure that the automobile is perfect. The end quality of your pictures is dependent upon your attention to details. Whenever we take a photograph for a client and create their unique art we do exactly the same. Starting with the right photograph is key and we will provide some often overlooked aspects of automotive photography. Remember that you must start with the right photograph in order to obtain good and even great results
2. Digital Photography Basics For Automobiles:
There are two assumptions made here. The first is, that you are interested in color photography and the second is that you have read your camera owners manual and understand the features and capabilities at least at a basic level. With that said the intent of this guide is to help you get started with taking photographs and getting the best possible results. Before we continue, there is one thing often overlooked until it is too late that will ruin a great photograph. Shut off the date and time stamp feature. You can be sure that it will always take away from the picture or be in the wrong place where no amount of editing can account for it.
The focus here is to start with the best of everything possible and use your camera to the fullest. This does not mean that you need to spend $2000 on a camera and special lenses, but it does mean taking advantage of the best capabilities your camera provides. Even a $100 camera can create good small prints. After you understand your cameras feature menu and how to navigate it go back and re-read the picture quality section again. Once you understand that section set your camera to the BEST modes possible
2.3. Always Use The Flash- Well Usually
No matter if you are using a standard film camera, or a digital camera you want to be sure that your camera ALWAYS uses the flash. The only possible exception to this would be for indoor photography where there are halogen or other obtrusive lighting that you may have to experiment with. To force your camera to use the flash set your camera to "FORCE Flash" or "Fill Flash", not "AUTOMATIC Flash". This flash is often represented by a ??lightening bolt?? symbol. Automatic flash will determine if the flash goes off based upon the amount of light detected. When we tell you to use your flash in the sun, automatic flash will almost never turn on since it will think there is sufficient lighting. Using the flash helps to illuminate the shadowing areas, as well as minimizing any glare along with balancing the overall lighting. Force flash should be used for exterior shots, cockpit shots, and engine bay shots.
You compose and shoot that great engine bay shot and then realize when you are working with the photograph later that all you see if the top of the engine and nothing more. The flash will make the steering box, headers and other components stand out as well as enhance the top of the engine detail and make the colors stand out even more. The following examples show the difference with and without flash. In the first figure the image is rather washed out and with the blue not so blue and the red and other colors not all that brilliant.
2.7. Lens Filters and Shades
If you must take photographs in bright sun, such as an outside car show, use a lens shade and force to overcome the harsh sun. The other alternative to use especially if your flash is not powerful enough flash is to use a polarizing filter instead of the flash. The polarizing filter is one of the most useful filters for outdoor photography and is a requirement for any serious photographer, especially for those that use a digital camera. A polarizing filter will reduce the glare and make colors stand out more in harsh sun conditions. These filters can significantly reduce white-outs or wash-outs (surfaces with the primary color all washed out) due to bright reflections. Some photograph flaws can be edited out and touched up, however, these flaws are nearly impossible to eliminate after the fact and make look natural.
A second important tool to have in your camera bag is a lens shade. A lens shade is inexpensive and is attached on the end of your lens to keep excess light from directly entering lens. It basically provides a tunnel that shields the optics (lens), and due to its black color absorbs any bouncing light. This helps the camera to better detect the light levels of the subject.
3. The Photo Shoot ?? How Do We Work With What We Have
Now that you have a general understanding of how to use your camera, lets focus on where, when, and how to get the optimum environment. There are some things in our control, and others that are not, and at any one time they can change. It is important that we discuss each elements so you can decide what to do given your situation. These elements are lighting, the location, and the position of the automobile. If you are restricted to a specific time of day, then you many not have any control over the lighting, or do you. If you are photographing the vehicle at a show, you are probably limited to its position and location. Ideally you want the best lighting, optimum flexibility with positioning the vehicle. Lastly if you are going to remove the background from the final print, the cleanest background for editing is desirable. This section will help you take advantage of any flexibility and optimize your shoot given the environment.
3.1. Pick The Right Lighting
Given that we are focusing on color photography, proper lighting is essential. In fact proper lighting actually means LOTS OF LIGHT, and the correct type of light. Without proper lighting it is nearly impossible to have an award winning photograph, even one that has touched up with the best photo editing tools. When it comes to lighting you want to have an even distribution of light over the entire surface of the automobile. This light illuminates all areas, is not harsh or glaring and does not cause shadowing. Sun light that is at a low-angle such as at sun rise or sun set is often the best. This low-angle light covers the side surfaces with light. Sun light that is high in the sky such as that mid-day harsh sun must be avoided or you will have glaring reflections. This harsh light results in the top surfaces being washed out, and the lower areas being dark with excessive shadowing. The ultimate goal is low angle, soft, evenly distributed light that illuminates the entire vehicle. Also remember to keep the sun behind you and watch out for your own shadow!
3.2. Picking The Location
The lighter color the ground surface the better the lower area lighting will be and less lower body panel shadowing due to the upward reflected light. Parking the vehicle on a light colored concrete surface versus a dark asphalt surface has this is a major benefit as well as making the tire profiles stand out due to the black rubber from the lighter surface. This reflection will better illuminate the lower areas including the undercarriage and minimize shadows.
The intent for many of the photographs put into fantasy scenes is to remove the background and have the vehicle stand alone. It is important that nothing sticks up in front of any part of the vehicle and causes an obstruction. Unless your final print will be of your automobile in a grassy field, do not take your pictures on a lawn or grassy field. The blades of grass will hide the bottom of the tires as well as produce reflections and irregular shadowing on the lower panels and any reflective surfaces such as bumpers. This is also true if taking pictures on a gravel area. The tires could slightly depress the surface hiding the lower portion.
3.3. Positioning The Vehicle
Park the vehicle away from anything that will cause a reflection on it. For example, the white parking lot stripes will be reflected on the side panels and in the glass. Any building signs or even trees will be reflected and even if they are not clear, they will end up looking like distorted body work in the final print. Remember your automobile can be like a mirror and many things around will show up as a reflection and later take away from the final picture.
Position the vehicle for the best lighting. Remember that you want to always take the picture from the sun side and not the shadow side (sun always behind you). This may require that you reposition the vehicle during a photo shoot for optimum lighting from all sides. Make sure that the areas that you are photographing (i.e. front/side, etc.) are positioned for best lighting.
3.5. What Angles Should You Take
Take a series of photographs with all doors, hood, trunk are completely closed. This series should include the following shots (refer to the example pictures). In this section we will include the final photographs that were created in order to help you jump ahead and start to visualize what can be done as you look at the different angles. These are only a few compositions, and many more combinations could be created using different backgrounds and the inclusion / exclusion of various elements. Just use your imagination, and eventually you will be able to look at a vehicle and have a good idea of what the final print will look like.
4. Basic Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator Introduction
For most photography work and picture manipulation you will be using Adobe Photoshop or other similar photo editing tool. If you will be creating large prints greater than 11x17 with text, you should use an illustration tool that provides good text and layout capabilities such as Adobe Illustrator. With these two types of tools you can create fantastic and artistic pictures, and then include them in professional looking layouts. The intent of this section is to provide some starting guidelines to create some of the basic pictures that are displayed on www.PalmieriConcepts.com. Keep in mind that the guidelines and steps provided here have been generalized, however, they will point you in the right direction to create a great picture. The references in this section are referring to Photoshop, so if you are using a different photo editing tool, you will need to find the equivalent features.

Photo Mishaps-top 3 Reasons Your Photo Doesn’t Turn Out Great

We all know how frustrating it is when our photos don’t turn out good. There are many reasons why this happens but most of the time people assume it is a defaulty camera. And most of the time that is just not the case. So before you blame your camera for that crappy photo let me tell you what you should always keep in mind before pushing that button to snap a photo.

Camera Shake:

Alot of times I hear people complaining that there photos are turning out blurry. Well, The number one cause of this is camera shake. Most people assume that they can just point a camera and snap away with out another thought. Please don’t do this. It will ruin an otherwise great photo. I guess now your wondering what excactly you can do to get rid of camera shake. Well, It’s not always easy but there are ways. The first thing that should come to mind is a Tripod. This is the number one thing you should invest in after buying a camera. If you plan on using your camera to take portraits, close-ups, or nice scenic photos, then it is always best to use a Tripod. This will improve the quality of your photos drastically. Also, If your just snapping some casual photos of your kids and family another technique you should keep in mind is to hold your breath. Yes, I know it sounds funny, but by holding your breath before you snap the picture will actually reduce the amount of camera shake in your photo. Go ahead, try it if you don’t believe me.

Okay, So what have we learned so far? Thats right, Always be aware of camera shake.
If your having problems with this and you don’t have a tripod then you could always try proping your camera up on top of something, oh and one more thing, While holding your camera make sure that your arms and elbows are tucked into your body or rather resting on your chest/stomach as to further reduce the amount of camera shake, hold your breath, and snap away.

Lighting:

Okay, so most of you already know by now but just to make it clear Lighting effects your photos drastically. This is one of the biggest mistakes I see people do. So please, before you decide to snap away, always take note of where the sun is. Making sure your subject is not squinting because the sun is in there eyes. Try taking pictures at different angles to be sure you get a good shot. Another tip is to make sure your subject is not in too much shade either. If so, be sure to use your flash. Experiment as much as possible. Trying shooting at different times of the day paying close attention to where the sun is, your camera settings, and how you took the photo. Now, besides outdoors lighting there is also indoor lighting to be aware of. Alot of people complain that there photos taken indoors are not turning out as sharp as they would like. One way to get around this is to use a higher ISO. Most digital cameras go up to 800 or more ISO. So be sure and try different ISO settings while indoors. But be careful as to how high because this is also known to cause more grain or noise in your photo.

Composition:

And finally, Before you even think about pressing that shutter button (smoothly, I might add for nice sharp photos) always, always consider what you want in the viewfinder. Do we really need a tree limb growing from uncle lee’s head?! I didn’t think so. Or, What about the junk scatterd throughout the yard in the background?! You guessed it. So, before snapping a picture, ask yourself, What is the main subject? Where is the light? Are there any distractions I don’t want in my photo? Composition is key to achieving a great photo. You should try to fill the viewfinder with your main subject or point of interest and avoid any distractions. This technique is sure to make your photos go from good to just plain great!

On another note, If your taking landscape, scenic, or things of that matter. You will want to try and frame your photo. This means only getting certain elements in the picture. Again, we wouldn’t want an ugly powerline going through our Sunset would we?!

Using Framing Supplies

Using framing supplies. After you have gone to all of the effort to create a beautiful painting or photograph, you will want to ensure that it is beautifully preserved for many years to come. There are, however, several ways that artwork can become damaged. Exposure to heat or cold, water, dirt, dust, pollution, and light can all play a part in causing the artwork to lose its luster. There are steps artists can take to protect your artwork from damage, and it comes down to your choice of picture framing supplies.

Temperature changes can distress your artwork held within a frame. Variations of heat and cold can cause artwork to expand and contract. Because of this movement, a piece of art can buckle within a frame, which can wreak havoc with the surface of the artwork. One way to prevent this from happening is to consider using framing supplies such as photo corners when mounting the art to the mount board. Because these corners are not permanently attached to the mount board, they offer a bit of give and take when the art is moving due to temperature fluctuations, and can lengthen the life of the artwork.

Another condition damaging to artwork is when water builds up inside a framed piece of art. If the artwork is in direct contact with the glazing, the resulting water from high atmospheric humidity levels can mar the surface of the art. Even if it is not in contact because a mat board separates it, nevertheless the combination of water with pollutants, dirt and dust can create acids harmful to your artwork, which can also cause deterioration in wood picture frames. This problem can be lessened by the use of acid-free framing supplies, including the mat board, method of adhesion of the art to the mount board, and the mount board itself.

Light that plays on your artwork can also be a source of damage. Ultra violet light rays can be harmful to photographs and other types of artwork, because they can cause the art to fade. If your artwork is placed near a window, this is an important consideration. In order to prevent light damage, many artists use acrylic glazing framing supplies. Although glass, a common glazing material, is strong and scratch resistant, acrylic framing supplies can be infused with a matte finish to reduce glare on the artwork’s surface. It also comes in a form that resists ultra violet light penetration, which also helps to preserve the artwork within.

How to Shoot Absolutely Stunning Sunsets

Sunsets are just one of the things in life that everybody loves. Whether it’s the warm tones that attract people, or the fact that every sunset is unique, people love looking at sunsets. Here’s a checklist for those of you who are interested in capturing these great natural wonders.

Know when the sun is going to set. This is the number one thing to remember when shooting sunsets. I guarantee you will not get a good picture if you show up once the sun is below the horizon. Keep in mind any landscapes that will affect the time of the sunset. If the sun is going to be setting behind a mountain range then anticipate the sun to drop below the horizon a few minutes before the sun actually sets.

Set your exposure and composition well before the sun actually sets. Give yourself at least half an hour before the time the sun will set to get your camera and tripod ready. Play around with the composition and try different angles while the sun is still in the sky. Look for objects, buildings, or landmarks that will create interesting silhouettes with the sun behind them. Exposure is a little harder. You will not know the exact exposure until the sun has actually set but you can have an idea of the exposure values that will look best. Play around with the exposure until you get something you like.

Take as many shots as you can. A sunset is a dynamic scene and is always changing. I recommend taking a couple pictures every minute. Each picture will be different from the one before.

Use a tripod. Sure, you can still photograph a sunset while holding your camera but using a tripod will allow you to take longer exposures while eliminating camera shake. A sunset is considered a landscape so stop down your aperture as much as you can. Try something like f/22 or higher. This will increase the depth of field, putting the whole scene in focus. The smaller aperture will increase the shutter length, giving you richer and warmer colors.

Try to include clouds in your composition. Someone once told me that amazing sunset photos almost always include clouds. Take a look for yourself. Almost every beautiful photo of a sunset you see will have clouds in the frame. This is because clouds are dramatic. They invoke emotion. If you want great sunsets, look for clouds.

Make sure the sky is the most dominant part of the photo. Sounds obvious, but what good is a photo of a sunset where two-thirds of the photo is the ground and only one-third is the sky. The sky is the main subject of the picture so emphasize it.

Work fast. The sunset will be over before you know it. Your timeframe will be about 10 minutes or less so it is good to know how your camera works before you get to the scene. The more sunsets you photograph the quicker you will become so if you have free time during the evening go take some pictures!

Wear sunglasses! Always remember not to look directly into the sun. You can cause severe eye damage by looking directly into the sun whether it’s with your naked eye or through the viewfinder. You have an LCD for a reason…use it.

Well there you have it, some tips for taking great sunset photographs. Just remember, the more you go out and practice the better your shots will be.

1. You don’t need the most expensive equipment right away. Buying a top of the line professional camera right from the get go will not help you one bit and it definitely won’t improve your photographs…yet. Start off with a point and shoot camera or an entry level DSRL camera and work your way up to the pro cameras. If you buy an advanced camera right away it will be difficult to work on your technique and creativity because you will be spending all of your time learning how to use the camera. Start off slow and work your way up.
2. Keep your camera with you at all times. Sometimes the best photo opportunities come at a time when you would least expect it. By bringing your camera with you at all times you will increase your chances of getting some great shots. Try packing your camera in your backpack or keeping it in your car and you will never miss a great opportunity again.
3. Invest in a tripod. Even the best photographers can’t keep their camera steady on every shot. Using a tripod will cut down on the blur in your photos and maybe even increase the chance of taking a great picture.
4. Learn the basic rules. Every great photographer has to start somewhere. Read up on composition, exposure, and learn about the relationship between shutter and aperature.
5. Experiment with your camera’s settings. Spend some time every day to learn something new about your camera. Play around and see what happens when you use different settings in different situations. 10. Hold your camera level. There is nothing more distracting in a photograph than an uneven horizon. Most cameras have a setting that will superimpose a grid over your picture in the viewfinder. Use the grid to line up the horizon and your audience will be able to focus on the subject in your photo and not the uneven horizon.

Cricut Design Studio: 7 Things Every Beginner Needs to Know

You finally purchased the Cricut Design Studio software. Most likely your next question is, “Now what do I do?” Here are seven things you need to know to jump start your learning of the program.

You can design with all of the cartridges, but you can only cut with the ones you have. Cricut Design Studio has every available cartridge loaded into the program. You can create all kinds of cutting files with any cartridge they offer. While that is fun for experimenting, just remember that when you go to cut the Cricut will ask you to load the specific cartridge used.

You can use more than one cartridge in a cutting. The options are endless. Bring letters and images from any cartridge into the cutting you are designing. When you are ready to cut, the Cricut will ask you to load each cartridge you used.

Connecting letters together to form one cutting is reffered to as welding. In order to weld letters together it is important to remember to check the welding box for each individual letter or image. Another interesting tidbit about welding is that it removes any scorelines on the image.

You can use other people’s cut files. If you are low on creativity or time, your best solution is to use a file designed by someone else. There are Cricut Design Studio users that freely share their designs and ideas. The best starting point would be the Cricut.com message boards. There you will find links you can follow to cut files all over the web. Simply download the file to your computer and the open it in the Design Studio.

You need to get updates to the Cricut Design Studio at Cricut.com. The updates not only fix any bugs in the program, they also add the latest cartridge releases for you to design with.

When previewing a cut, if it is welded together, the cutting lines will be in a bold line. If an image previews as a solid color then it is not welded. It is easy to miss checking the welding box on a letter as you are creating, and this is a sure-fire way to make sure that none of them are missing.

You can use several layers when creating a design. For example, If you are creating a shadow for an image you need to open a new layer just for the shadow. Otherwise, when you go to cut it will cut the image and the shadow at the same time using the same paper. When previewing, the user has the option as to whether or not other layers show through to the one they are working on.

Digital Camera Tips: Getting Better Group Photographs

Family reunions, little league teams, birthday parties, and class field trips are just a few scenarios when many of us have tried and failed to get the perfect group shot that reflects the mood of the occasion. Where did we go wrong and how can we get the photographs we want with our own digital camera?
One option, although a bit pricey for “everyday” purposes, is to hire a professional photographer. I am assuming however that most people reading on this topic are hoping to learn the tips they need for getting better group shots with their own camera. Thus, here are some hints that can help:

Get set up.

People get impatient, tired, children begin to wander and fidget, and everyone’s smile begins to wither if they have to wait around while you select the perfect location, get your camera set up, rearrange your subjects, and so forth.

Be sure to find a spot that is large enough to accommodate the number of people you will be photographing.

Be sure there is adequate lighting. Open blinds, turn on lamps, and use additional light sources indoors. Outdoors, be sure that the sun is not directly in front of your subjects to eliminate squinting. Also be sure that the sun t is not directly behind subjects shining into the camera. The sun should be at a 45 to 90 degree angle to your subjects.

Know how you want to pose the group. More about this in a moment, but for now suffice it to say; figure out how you want to do it before the people arrive to be photographed.

Get your camera ready.

The camera should be on, set up on a tripod, and any settings selected.

Take charge.

Tell the subjects how you want them to pose. Arrange them and coach them through the process. Tell them where to face. Should they be looking at the guest of honor, the coach, the bride and groom, or the camera? Should they smile or be more relaxed? It depends on the type of look you want the photograph to have.

Get everyone arranged.

This will vary by the group size and the type of event. To assure the faces of both tall and short people alike can be seen, you will need to arrange carefully. Generally you want taller people in back and in the center. For large groups you may need to vary heights more: have some seated in front, some kneeling, and then those further back from the camera should be standing.

Pulling the group together will allow you to step closer and assure that faces can be seen. Having the group stand shoulder to shoulder, all facing the camera can look very stiff and also makes it difficult to get close enough to see any detail. It is better to curve the rows and use various heights to bring the group in to a narrower range and allow faces to be seen in the photograph as you get closer to the group.

Arranging groups on stairs and shooting from above the group looking down are two ways of fitting the group into a tighter pattern. Another technique is to angle everyone 45 degrees facing slightly in toward the center of the group to get very large groups organized in a smaller pattern.

Know how and when to shoot.

With groups you will definitely want to take multiple shots to be sure you get at least one or two pictures that are “good” of each individual. Take these rapidly; pros use burst mode. One way to improve your chances of eliminating shots with closed eyes is to instruct subjects to close their eyes and then on the count of 3 to open their eyes and smile. Another important consideration is to take the group shot before the very end of any event (excluding, of course, group shots such as a game victory, etc.) This will assure that everyone is present and not exhausted.

One camera, one photographer technique

One final consideration involves an issue I frequently encounter when family reunions occur or multiple parents are involved with an event. A group shot is orchestrated but it takes a half an hour for everyone to get the shot they want with their camera. There is time involved in both setting up each camera in the preferred location and, in some instances, time for the person taking the photograph to run to and from the group as the photographer/subject role changes.

The best method is to allow one person to take all photographs with a single camera and then, thank goodness for digital cameras, e-mail all photographs to everyone present.

Master Digital Infrared Photography With Your Nikon Digital Slr

The Nikon D70 SLR is ideally suited to Digital Infrared Photography mainly due to the power of its custom settings. I’m going to take a few moments to show you what camera settings I use for my digital infrared photos and hopefully help you get the best results from your Nikon digital SLR.

First thing – get a tripod, this is pretty much a must for perfect infrared shots, and the infrared filter of your choice – I like the Hoya R72.

Next, take some time to plan your digital infrared photograph. Taking the time to do this upfront will help eliminate some of the uncertainties of digital infrared photography, which can result in only an ok photo, rather than a WOW! photo.

As always with these kinds of things, there is no one right way to achieve results. But these steps are the ones that I have had the most success with, using my D70 so far.

Image Type

For digital infrared photography I really prefer to shoot in RAW mode. Although Nikons native NEF format is so versatile, it just doesn’t come up to the high quality of RAW mode, and any imperfections can always be edited out using Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.

ISO

Good results can be achieved by increasing the ISO setting, but I’ve had the best results when I leave it at 200. Otherwise the noise is just too great – at least in my opinion. I also do a fair amount of post processing in Photo shop , so noise is a problem when working at higher magnifications. Remember, unlike infrared film, where the graininess is part of the look and feel of the image, digital infrared “grain” or noise really degrades your image. If you want to add the look of grainy film, do it in Photoshop, or other image-editing program.

White Balance

In my experience, setting a custom white balance is a key to GOOD Digital Infrared Photography with the Nikon d70. Because you are using a filter that blocks most “regular” light, the camera’s internal white balancing mechanism cannot provide you with an accurate measurement of the colour temperature of your environment. Since foliage reflects IR light, making it the brightest, whitest part of your photo, you’ll need to “calibrate” your D70 to let it know that visible light green is equal to infrared white.

There are a couple of ways to do this.

NUMBER 1: The simplest white balance method using the D70 is to open your menu, use the control button to flip down to the white balance setting, and change it to fluorescent +3. Since for infrared photography you’ll be most likely shooting in bright sunlight with a “red” filter, adding some false color correction in the camera, seems to give your final IR images more “punch.” I have also found the incandescent setting works too.

NUMBER 2: Another way to adjust white balance for digital infrared photography with the Nikon D70 is to take a photo of green grass at midday in full sun. Just the grass – no feet, no trees, no sky. Just point your camera at the grass looking straight down, and click! Now, in your menu, you’ll set the white balance from this photo. So, go to your menu, select white balance, >preset> use photo>select image> use your control dial to navigate to the image of the grass (hopefully it is the only one on your card to make it easy). Your menu should now say “this image>set.” Now you’re ready to shoot infrared!

Outdoor 1 (Medium Zoom)
Looking at the first test picture I can immediately see the quality the Coolpix P6000 offers. Whereas other digital cameras struggle with the lightest areas of this shot and lose detail the Coolpix P6000 handles the problem caused by sun glare very well indeed. It also manages to produce far greater colour accuracy in these conditions than many cameras manage. Overall picture sharpness is also impressive.

Outdoor 2 (No Zoom)
The most noticeable point for me about this picture is the amount of light the camera manages to capture. This makes for a much lighter a more pleasing photo that is often the case. Sharpness in this photo is above average.

Outdoor 3 (Maximum Zoom)
This is another bright photo. I like the way the light and the colours combine to create vivid scenes. With the lens fully zoomed in sharpness is very good.

Outdoor 4 (Building)
My final outdoor test confirms most of my earlier findings. This is another attractive photo. Again the lighting plays a key role. The brickwork in the building is in sharp focus and the lens does well retaining sharpness as you move out towards the edges of the shot.

Outdoor Portrait
I like this photo. The colours are just right. Sharpness is very good indeed. All in all this suggests that the camera should produce great portrait shots in natural light.

Indoor Portrait with Flash
There is plenty of detail in this shot. The colours in the shot are generally good, but some extra pink has been added around the nose.

Indoor Portrait without Flash
The Coolpix P6000 manages to focus better than most cameras do. Although the end result is darker than it should be the picture as a whole is still much better than the majority of cameras manage.

Colours
As you can see from the comments I have made I am very happy with the colours the Coolpix P6000 produces. The main plus point is the balance of the colours. They are vivid with out being overbearing.

Macro
Nikon have used a high quality lens with this camera. Therefore it is not surprising it manages to produces one of the better macro shots. You should be able to produce some excellent close up shots with the Coolpix P6000.

ISO 400 and ISO 1600
The Coolpix P6000 performs well at ISO 400. There is less noise in the shot than I am used to seeing. By the time ISO is pushed up to ISO 1600 noise is a much bigger problem.

Overall
The Coolpix P6000 offers extra quality when compared to standard digital cameras. There is nothing in particular that really stands out, but you get that bit better all round quality.

Shutter Lag and Recycling Times

If there was one area where I was disappointed it was with the results of my shutter lag tests. A single photo took 0.53 seconds while five took 10.39 seconds. With flash turned on times increased to 1.75 seconds for a single shot and 26.95 seconds for five.

To turn the camera on and take the first shot took 3.95 seconds. Anyone who is used to the performance of a Digital SLR camera will be disappointed in these times.

I liked the feel of this camera as soon as I picked it up. The build quality appears to be very good and the controls have a solid feel. As with similar digital cameras the Coolpix P6000 looks a little like a mini SLR camera.

Very Good. Considering the features it has Nikon have done an excellent job when it comes to ease of use. You can set up your own quick access menu with your top six, most used features. There is also a selection wheel to speed up the process of selecting settings. The menus are well laid out and it will be hard to find an advanced digital camera that is any easier to use.

The Nikon Coolpix P6000 is an impressive camera. It has a great set of features. These have been put together in a clever way that makes the camera as easy as it can be to use when taking all the features into account. Picture quality is very good indeed. The downside comes with the shutter delay times. These are very disappointing for a camera of this quality.

Lens Aperture Tips [ by Canon Australia ]

Introduction The aperture-priority auto exposure mode on your digital SLR camera gives you amazing control over the look and feel of your photos. Learning how to set the aperture to achieve certain effects is well worth your time.

When you read about lens aperture, you'll see numbers such as "f/2.8" and "f/11." These numbers refer to the size of the aperture. Typically the numbers will range from f/2.8 to f/22, with f/2.8 being the largest and f/22 the smallest. When you move up or down from one aperture to the next, you either double or halve the amount of light entering your camera. For instance, going from f/5.6 to f/8 would "stop down" the lens, halving the amount of light. Going from f/16 to f/11, on the other hand, would double the amount of light. Isolating your subject from the background

Sometimes a busy or colourful background can take the eye's focus away from the subject of the photograph. To isolate your subject from a distracting background, follow these three simple steps:

1.Select aperture-priority mode (A). Then, manually adjust the lens aperture to f/4 or f/5.6. If your subject is in the distance and you're shooting with a telephoto lens, set the aperture to f/8.

2.Shoot the picture.

3.Review the picture on your Digital SLR cameras LCD screen. Zoom in on an area of the picture where the subject overlaps the background. Does the subject appear sharp against a blurred background? If so, you've achieved your desired results. If only part of your subject is sharp, re-shoot the picture with a smaller aperture. If the background is not blurred enough, try opening the lens aperture by one stop.

Achieving an all-around sharp photo

Much of the time we want each element of the photo in sharp focus, both the subject and the background. To take a picture where every detail is crisp and defined, set the aperture to f/11 or smaller. A wide angle lens is particularly helpful for achieving this effect. For portraits of people in which you want the background sharp as well, stop the lens down to f/8 or smaller.

When you're photographing people, there's always a chance of blurring because of subject movement. A higher ISO setting helps prevent blurring caused by subject movement and camera shake. You should also compensate for the small lens aperture by using a slower shutter speed.

Another thing to watch out for when using a small lens aperture is distracting or unappealing elements in the photo. For example, you may not notice the electrical wire in the background, but it will come into sharp focus with the small lens aperture. Keep this factor in mind when composing your shots.

Taking close-ups

Why Buy the Fuji Finepix S1000FD?

The Finepix S1000fd is that bit cheaper than most super zoom models. A large part of the reason for this is that it has a shorter zoom and one or two less features than some of its competitors. The upside of the Finepix S1000fd not having every bell and whistle is that it helps to make the camera that bit easier to use.

Image Quality Fuji Finepix S1000FD test shots

Outdoor 1 (Medium Zoom) The Finepix S1000fd handles the colours and darker areas of the photos well. I am impressed with the definition showing on the name of one of the boats in the centre of the photo. Sharpness is good too. Some detail is lost from the brightest areas of the shot where the sun falls on the boat.

Outdoor 2 (No Zoom) Focusing is roughly in line with most other digital cameras in this shot. In terms of focusing, this is the toughest test I run. The more distant parts of the scene are softer, but the majority of the shot is sharp enough. I would like to have seen greater brightness in the shot.

Outdoor 3 (Maximum Zoom) There is a strong turquoise-fringing showing in this shot. It is true that all super zooms have this problem (or more commonly purple fringing) to a degree, but this photo suggests the Finepix S1000fd suffers more than most others. This problem occurs in bright conditions, with light coloured subjects in the shot. It is likely that the problem will be evident even in smaller prints.

With the lens fully extended focusing levels are softer than average.

Outdoor 4 (Building) This is another photo I would like to have seen a touch lighter. In the shaded areas, there is a loss of definition in the photo. In the brighter sections, the photo is much sharper than when the zoom lens was fully extended.

Outdoor Portrait Working much closer to the subject makes for a sharply focused photo. The colours are quite strong, but they do lend a lot of warmth to the photo. I have used a white balance setting of shady to add some extra punch to the colours in the shot.

Indoor Portrait with Flash The pop up flash unit produces plenty of brightness. This is a sharp photo. Perhaps some extra warmth in the skin tones would have improved the photo further.

Indoor Portrait without Flash Using the natural lighting available, the Finepix S1000fd manages to produce a light, bright photo. This works well for the darker areas of the hair. Noise is controlled well in the shot.

Colours There is plenty of colour in my test shots, without this digital camera going over the top. With strong blues and greens, this should help to produce colourful landscapes.

Macro In super macro mode, the Finepix S1000fd is able to get in very close to the subject. This helps to deliver a bright, clear photo with good level of detail. In fact, this macro shot stands up very well against other similar digital cameras.

ISO 400 and ISO 1600 Fuji digital cameras tend to handle higher ISO settings as well as or better than other brands. That is the case with the Finepix S1000fd. Although noise is still apparent in the darker or more shaded areas of the shots, the camera controls noise levels better than most cameras manage.

Overall I am happy enough with the Finepix S1000fd. Ironically the one problem shot is the one where the zoom is fully extended. This after all is the key test photo for this camera. I also found some of my test photos a little dark.

Shutter Lag Taking a single photo with the Finepix S1000fd clocked a reasonable time of 0.42 seconds. All my other tests produced slow times. Five photos took 19.63 seconds, a photo with flash 1.68 seconds, and five photos with flash 20.47 seconds.

It took 3.08 seconds to turn the camera on and take a photo.

Style: The Finepix S1000fd is small for a super zoom camera. Like most of its competitors, it has been modelled on a digital SLR.

Points I like: Easier than other super zooms - compact size for type of camera

Where it could improve: Shot with zoom fully extended disappointing

Alternatives If you would like to try a super zoom digital camera with a longer lens, better overall picture quality and one or two extra features, try the Nikon Coolpix P80.

Verdict: The Fuji Finepix S1000fd does most things well enough, apart from taking photos with the zoom fully extended. It is as easy to use as any super zoom camera and is also relatively compact.

Most people, and especially women, will tell you they have a "good" side.

Simple cosmetic lighting relies on alterations to the angles of illumination, described in "the basic principles of lighting", and " available light portraiture", to flatter the subject and make use of their "good side".

I have aimed to keep this article simple, and avoid reference to techniques that require more specialized lighting equipment.

Overview

How many times have you heard someone say "that's a terrible photograph of me", or even said it yourself?

The point of cosmetic light is avoid unflattering lighting and viewpoints.

Modelling and texture is a consequence of lighting. Moving the angle of illumination closer to the subject/camera axis generally flattens modelling and reduces texture, while increasing the angle increases both.

Similarly, more directional (intense) lighting produces harder shadows, while less directional (soft) lighting diminishes them.

The following tips describe how to deal with common problems by making simple changes. Experimentation is required to achieve the best results.

Making faces wider or narrower

Very few people have perfectly symmetrical faces. For example, one side may be slightly wider or flatter than the other. If the subject is illuminated so that the main light falls on the side that is wider, and the other side is kept in shadow, the viewer's imagination will lead them to think that the shaded side is equal to the lit side. The overall impression will be that the face is wider than it really is. Conversely, if the narrower side of the face is illuminated, the viewer will think that the face is narrower than it really is.

This illusion can be varied by changing the angle of lighting, and the maximum effect comes from very dark shadows, since this leaves more to the viewer's imagination.

Altering eye sockets

If the subject has deep eye sockets, lowering the main light will provide more illumination, and make the eye sockets appear shallower.

Conversely, shallow eye sockets, or bulging eyes can be altered by raising the main light source, and moving it further away from the subject/camera axis (i.e. more to the side). This needs to be done in conjunction with making the fill-in light a little brighter, and the overall effect will be a flattening of the planes of the face.

Large noses

Large noses can be de-emphasized by moving the main light source closer to the subject/camera axis. This will cast a nose shadow on the upper lip, rather than the cheek, so making the nose look less large.

Attractive hair or baldness

Hair can be emphasized by raising the main light and the camera view point. The subject will need to be repositioned slightly, so that they look up to the camera. With a bald subject, this is will have the opposite effect and further emphasize their baldness.

Chins

If the subject has a weak chin, get them to tilt their head back a little, which will make their chin stick out. If they have a strong jaw, have the subject tilt their head forward reduce its prominence.

Soft focus

Soft focus reduces and skin blemishes. Soft focus can be achieved by using the largest lens aperture possible (however the effect will largely be determined by the capabilities of your camera lens). Briefly, larger apertures have a smaller depth of focus, so any feature beyond the focal point will be very slightly blurred. You should always focus on the eyes, but this becomes doubly important when employing any form of soft focus.

With natural light, you will also avoid problems such as red eye or over exposure. Also, you'll catch them where they're most comfortable and less likely to move.

Keeping the photo natural may mean going to them and getting at their level. If your cat is perched on top of a ledge, stand on a step stool. If you're dog is poking his nose out from under the bed, get down on your stomach and get as close as possible.

No. 2. Capture their character. Every animal has its own personality. Sometimes, they don't like to reveal it to strangers, so that's why it's important to capture it in photographs for your digital photo album. A great way to capture your pet's personality is by keeping their eyes in focus, and making their eyes the focal point of a photograph.

If you're cat always yawns after waking up from a nap, keep a camera handy and capture the moment. If they're the more playful type, bounce a ball or roll a piece of string in front of them and capture them hopping around, having fun.

No. 3. Capture them in a posed shot. Now, there's a time and place for doing silly human things with your pet - like dressing your dog up in pink ruffles or your cat in a studded collar - and when you do, make sure your camera is close at hand! Posed pictures can be great fun to look at years down the road. And most times, the pets don't mind the attention at all.

Another way to get a posed shot is right after a bath. Often, this is an unpleasant task for the both of you, but you can at least make it a little better for you by getting a picture of your pet all clean. Or, maybe you want to get a cute picture of your normally fluffy dog with his hair all matted down and wet.

Photos are such a wonderful way to share the joy of having a pet. You can show them anytime you want to relatives and friends. And when you have a digital photo album filled with wonderful photos, you'll keep the memories of your pet alive forever.

Another morning, another train to London for another Canon camera launch. This is becoming something of a habit. Still, at least this one is late enough in the day that I can avoid the early morning commuter crush. A country boy I may be, but that doesn't mean I enjoy feeling like livestock on the way to market. Indeed, this morning's voyage has been rather pleasant.

It started off, as many do, with a taxi to the train station. We've all been there; sat in the front passenger seat next to a complete stranger. You don't want to appear rude and spend the entire journey in resolute silence, but you know nothing about this person next to you, so how do you commence conversation? Inevitably, the same old chestnuts flow; "Are you just starting or just finishing your shift?", or "Busy at the moment?", or that all-time favourite failsafe of the British travelling public "Isn't this weather terrible?"

This morning, however, the conversation was free-flowing from the moment the driver asked where I was going. After I explained the reason for my trip to London, a lengthy discussion ensued regarding the status of the camera market at present. My chauffeur was obviously well informed. He enquired as to whether the increasing popularity and quality of camera-phones was having an effect on camera sales, so we talked about compact cameras versus camera-phones, SLRs versus compact cameras, stills photography versus video, DVD versus hard-drive recording and even Betamax versus VHS. The conclusion we came to was that the most successful players in any of the electronics markets today were the ones who had been able to adapt; those manufacturers who, rather than burying their heads in the sand and hoping that the latest developments in the hi-tech world will pass them by and leave their little corner untouched, embrace the new technologies on offer and incorporate them into their portfolio of products. It is this thought that I currently have in my head as the Suffolk countryside passes by outside the train window.

There's no denying it; Canon are a success story. Along with other brands, they not only excelled in the traditional film based photography of past, but have adapted to, and in many cases led, the change over to a now almost entirely digital industry. However, it's also fair to say that it's been a while since Canon launched an SLR camera that has forced photographers to sit up and take notice of what they are doing. This launch could therefore be very important for them. I, like many people, have my suspicions as to what this new model might be, and if it is what we think it is, then it's a model that has been anticipated for some time by existing Canon SLR users and those looking to invest in an EOS system alike. So, will it be what we think it is and, perhaps more importantly, will it demonstrate Canon's ability to evolve with the ever-changing world of digital photography?

If their HQ at Woodhatch is anything to go by, Canon are evolving just fine, thank you very much. The building, which seems to be made almost entirely out of glass and timber, is itself awash with technological advances. Solar panels on the roof can produce enough electricity to light 50 homes and the computer controlled window shutters open and close to maintain the internal temperature. The lighting adjusts itself depending on the ambient light levels and turns off automatically if there's no one in the area. In short, Canon's UK home is a technological masterpiece. What better environment to launch their latest hi-tech offering?

After the prerequisite coffee and nibbles, it's time to meet the newcomer. It is of course Canon's replacement for the now somewhat long-in-the-tooth EOS 5D. Despite the rumours, it is not the EOS 7D, but rather the more straightforwardly named Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

With a staggering 21.1 mega pixels, the resolution of the 5D Mk II is a whopping 65% more than its predecessor. 21.1 million pixels. That's nearly 1 pixel for every person in Australia. Other marked improvements include a 3.0" display screen, 3.9 frames per second shooting, improved self-cleaning system, Live View and increased ISO range (ISO100-6400; expandable to ISO 50-25,600). In addition, the new Canon EOS 5D Mk II contains Canon's latest DiG!C 4 processor; the original 5D uses the DiG!C 2.

It's hardly surprising that there are so many advances; the Canon EOS 5D Mark II has been a long time coming! Bear in mind that at the time of its launch, the original 5D was the next model up from the EOS 20D. Since then we've had the 30D, then the 40D, and most recently the 50D, which the Canon EOS 5D Mk II now sits above.

However, without a doubt one of Canon's bravest moves with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is the inclusion of a full HD 1920x1080p 30 frame per second video capture. If this performs as well in real life as it does on paper (we weren't allowed to try it at the launch), then it's an incredible addition to a remarkable machine. The movie mode is activated by pressing the "set" button in the centre of the rear control wheel. Press it once to record and again to stop; dead simple. But to avoid the movie mode being activated accidentally, it is necessary to turn it on in the menu and it can only be used with Live View.

When playing with, sorry, testing Canon's new toy, it becomes apparent that the Canon 5D Mark II is probably the most appropriate title for this new EOS. So similar is it to the original model that using it will be second nature to any 5D owner. Sure, there have been some minor tweaks in the layout of the function buttons, mainly to accommodate some new ones, and the Canon Mark II has had the same weatherproofing upgrade the 50D was given, but it still looks and feels like the original 5D. So much so in fact, that the people at Canon were keen to point out to me that the new version is exactly the same size and weight as the old model. I would have anticipated that 8,300,000 extra pixels would have added something, but no, not a sausage.

Following hot on the heels of the Canon EOS 50D as it does, it comes as no great shock to find that the Canon 5D Mark II shares many of that camera's advances. The weatherproofing and Live View have already been mentioned, but the Canon EOS 5D Mark II also has the quick start menu found on the 50D which enables the user to change shooting settings with ease. Bearing in mind the pro/semi-pro market that this camera is aimed at, this facility is possibly even more useful on the Canon 5D Mark II than on the 50D.

It's something I rated the EOS 50D highly for, so it's only fair that I mention it as a slight negative for the Canon 5D Mark II, but unlike it's lower spec stable-mate, the new EOS does not share its predecessor's range of accessories. Whereas the 50D shares batteries and battery grip with the 40D, owners of the original 5D will find themselves having to replace existing batteries and grips as the EOS 5D Mk II takes the new LP-E6 battery and BG-E6 grip.

I would very much have liked to have taken some images with Canon's new baby to include on this article, but unfortunately this was a definite impossibility. No sooner had I taken the Compact Flash card from my pocket than I was practically jumped on by several burly looking Canon people and their Pro guy Mike gave me a look usually only seen on Victorian headmistresses and pre-menstrual traffic wardens. I put the card back into my pocket and backed slowly away.

However, Canon had enlisted the services of professional photographer and writer, Damien Lovegrove. Weddings are one of Damien's specialities and via a studio shoot with an obliging model in a wedding dress, Damien was able to showcase the performance EOS 5D MkII. One of the things that he was clearly taken by was the low image noise levels, something he was able to demonstrate superbly by shooting his model at ISO 6,400 in a dimly lit corridor. The level of detail and lack of noise in the shadow areas was superb, but until I'm allowed to shoot some images myself to show you, you'll have to take my word for it.

Perhaps the most telling statement about this camera is this; when the demonstration was over I approached Damien and put a few questions to him. Amongst other things relating to the Canon EOS 5D Mark II's suitability for his area of photography (the answer was "very"), I asked Damien if the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II would be a good back-up camera for pro photographers using Canon's 1D and 1Ds range of cameras.

"No." he replied, "It's better than that."

High praise indeed.

A shoplifter doesn't really have a perfect profile and hence it is more difficult to determine if the customer walking into the store is a genuine buyer or a fake one.

Inventory Shrinkage

Inventory shrinkage has hit retailers really hard. Inventory shrinkage consists of mainly shoplifting, employee theft, vendor fraud and to an extent administrative error. The total US inventory shrinkage costs in 2007 was to the tune of $31 billion and this data was released in the National Retail Security Survey report underlying the various causes of retail theft.

In a report made by criminologist Richard C. Hollinger, in the past one year, retailers have lost almost 1.7% of their gross annual sales due to inventory shrinkage. The survey took into account only that part of the retail economy, which showed transactions worth over $1.845 trillion dollars on an annual basis. So at the end of the day, the retail loss was approx. $31.3 billion. As of today, inventory shrinkage due to shoplifting and employee theft is the largest category in the US for of larceny and is said to be bigger than bank robberies and car theft.

According to a study related to inventory shrinkage, it was revealed that the security managers in retail were responsible for almost 48.5% of losses with employee theft costing the industry a gross loss of $15 billion. According to some of the other researches and market analysis reports, it has been revealed that shoplifting has increased retail losses by 31.7% last year as compared to 30.6% a few years back. Last year, the total or gross loss suffered by the retail industry due to shoplifting was around $10 billion.

Global Retail Theft Statistics

Let us take a quick look at the statistics worldwide where retail inventory shrinkage is concerned according to the Global Retail Theft Barometer Report 2007:

The total global shrinkage in terms of stock loss due to shoplifting, vendor fraud and employee theft cost $ 98,630 million in losses. The rate of inventory shrinkage has actually increased across the world from 1.34% to 1.36%.

Shoplifting is responsible for almost 42.0% of inventory shrinkage or $41,504 million in losses across the world.

A study conducted in 32 countries revealed that employee theft has cost retailers 35.2% of inventory shrinkage, which led to a loss of $34,671 million. Administrative errors came second with 16.5% and reported a total loss of $16,248 million while vendor theft was third with 6.3% or $6,207 million in losses.

The loss prevention costs globally was approx $25,590 million (£12,890 million), which is around 0.35% of the total retail sales.

Loss Prevention and Inventory Shrinkage

This is probably the toughest thing to do because it is extremely difficult to monitor every activity in the retail store. Back in the old days, it used to be that those who wanted to take just snapshots would just get a point and shoot camera. The serious photographers would all get SLRs. With today's wide variety of electronics, consumers have a huge set of options when it comes to choosing a camera, and these lines are no longer so distinct. Because of the more advanced features available on consumer level cameras with the advent of the digital revolution, you can take some very high quality pictures without going the full SLR route.

So, how do you find out if you need an SLR? To answer this questions, we'll assume that you're choosing between a high level, "prosumer" digital camera, and a quality digital SLR from a well known company. These prosumer cameras have the high image qualities, and full feature set that allows them be competitive with an SLR on many fronts. But, there are a few areas where they fall short of the capabilities of a full blown SLR.

If any of these features sounds unfamiliar to you, or you have no idea why you'd see yourself using them, you can safely choose a camera other than a digital SLR. If, however, you can't live without any of the following features, it looks like a SLR is in your future. Keep in mind that all these differences may not apply to all models, but on the whole, this serves as an accurate comparison.

The first and probably the most obvious differences between a SLR and a prosumer grade digital camera is speed. An SLR is faster in almost every way. Since you have an accurate, real time view of the scene through your viewfinder, and a very low shutter lag, you can literally "capture the moment" with an SLR. With most prosumer cameras, you're viewing the world through an LCD display, which has some inherent lag involved. Additionally, these cameras are also saddled with shutter lag, which means that even after you push the button, the picture isn't captured until a little bit later.

Another obvious difference between SLRs and prosumer models the the SLR's ability to use interchangeable lenses and accessories. Most prosumer cameras have a wide range zoom lens that covers a good portion of popular focal lengths. However, if you need a wider angle, or more magnification, you're out of luck. SLRs have lenses available for every purpose. You pay for this capability in terms of both money and weight, but for many, its worth it. External flashes are an option in some prosumer cameras, but these are an option for all SLRs. If you need to use a serious flash, you're getting an SLR for sure.

Another large difference is the size of the sensor. Simply put, a larger sensor means a better image, and SLRs deliver this in spades. Larger sensors also allow you to use higher ISOs without noise, which can be a lifesaver in low light and/or fast action. Also, the image from the SLR will simply look better, all else being equal.

Finally, you should consider that SLRs, being built for professionals, are very durable when compared to most prosumer digicams. If you need equipment that will hold up under abuse, you need to get an SLR.

Multiple sensory learning not only increases the retention power of students substantially, but also makes learning enjoyable. Currently, our education system lacks flexibility. We need to reshape education to make it more meaningful. This can be done by modifying the teaching methodology and the assessment system. We need to reinvent learning to make it a way of life. For learning to be meaningful it has to be highly flexible and accessible and not time bound or cordoned off to the walls of the classroom. The key to enhance learning is to look at the process from a holistic perspective. Using multimodal media like films, graphic novels, web content and actual hands-on can make learning an extremely enjoyable activity. However, the content plays a key role. The student's will and choice should be paramount. Hence, the content has to be centred on story-telling and not just visualization. One has to create excitement and interest and then watch the student thrive.

Teaching through story telling and films is one option that has not been exploited very well so far. Story telling is one medium which is immensely powerful as it develops concentration, attentiveness and sustained, active listening skills, activates visualisation and imagination, extends vocabulary and models the articulate use of oral language. It also develops sequencing, comprehension and prediction skills. it also develops memory and promotes social cohesion through shared experience.

Designing text books across the curriculum in the form of graphic novels and comics is a novel concept that can engage students. This can make reading enjoyable and fruitful to kids who are normally less interested in textbooks. The books can be filled with interesting characters, stories, graphics and practical examples to understand the concepts.

These days internet has reduced the globe to the size of a tennis ball, yet the school kids can't take an advantage of it and have to put up with the banal chalk and talk method. They are used to rote learning which stifles creativity and imagination. Instead it would be so much better if they could use educational games and quiz competitions and other innovative methods of learning.

We should usher in a system of learning which, for students is engaging and entertaining more than compulsive. For teachers and school administration it is constructive in feedback and detailed on suggestive ways of improvement. And for parents it is indicative of the true capabilities and potential of the child. A system that makes students discover their genius.

What's behind the uptick in the number of walkabout photographers toting digital SLR cameras rather than smaller point-and-shoots? Wider availability, lower costs, and greater functionality.

Once confined to the realm of enthusiast or professional photographers, digital SLRs now have greater appeal to more-casual photographers. "We're forecasting about 35 percent growth in the consumer SLR market this year," says David Haueter, an analyst at imaging market research firm InfoTrends.

IDC, another market research firm that tracks digital SLR shipments, makes similar estimates. IDC says it expects U.S. shipments of digital SLR cameras to grow to 2.2 million units this year. Furthermore, by 2011, IDC expects the market to nearly double, to 4 million units in the United States alone (about 36 percent of the total units worldwide).

And fortunately for digital SLR buyers, prices on digital SLRs continue to drop. According to InfoTrends, the average selling price of a digital SLR in 2006 was $966. Now, Haueter says, "we expect the average selling price to drop to $775 for 2007, driven by lower-priced and very popular models such as the Nikon D40x and Canon Digital Rebel XTi."

Taking Photography to the Next Level

Inexpensive digital SLR models might be driving the market for new camera purchases, but for people looking to upgrade--or to graduate from advanced point-and-shoot cameras--the introductions this week of new midrange cameras from Nikon and Canon are significant.

Nikon's new addition is a $1799 D300 (body only); Canon's is a $1299 EOS 40D (body only).

The Canon 40D will ship by the end of the month, while the Nikon D300 will come in November, just in time for the holiday season.

Together, Canon and Nikon control 80 percent of the consumer digital SLR market, according to InfoTrends. These companies' combined heavyweight market share makes it all the more noteworthy that the two are simultaneously refreshing their step-up cameras.

Both models bring professional-level features to consumers, yet both aim to attract photo enthusiasts and professionals as well. "They're trying to make it easy for someone to move up from a point-and-shoot to an SLR by adding scene modes, auto settings, and live view [features]," says Haueter. "But they're also trying to appeal to some of the pros to use [one of] these midrange models as a backup camera."

Analysts are seeing a clear trend in how people are expanding their use of digital cameras. "It's easier in today's market to become an enthusiast/professional photographer," says Ron Glaz, program director of digital imaging at IDC. "We're seeing a lot of growth among individuals who'd consider themselves a hobbyist or enthusiast, and who might also work weddings for free."

This latest generation of midrange cameras straddles the consumer and professional markets as never before. "Manufacturers hope that as the low-end digital SLR users really get into photography, and as they move up the scale from hobbyist and early adopter to more of the enthusiast, they will buy more-sophisticated digital SLRs [by the same company] because they already have the lenses and other accessories," says Glaz.

Features Trickle Down, and Creep Up

For the most part, technology tends to migrate down to lower-cost models, but that isn't always the case. Take the example of Nikon's D300: This camera integrates scene modes and creative functions that have migrated up from the company's lower-cost point-and-shoot models. "People are trying to be more creative with their images, and a lot of them are trying to do the creativity in their camera, and not in Photoshop," notes Glaz. By putting such features into a digital SLR, "it's eliminating the need to utilize your PC to tie the creativity to the photo. People enjoy taking the pictures more than they enjoy editing them."

A live LCD preview of your image--a standard feature on point-and-shoot cameras--previously wasn't common on SLR cameras. (Olympus was the first to offer this capability, on its eVolt E-330 digital SLR, introduced a year ago.)

Live-preview functionality in the Canon 40D and Nikon D300 is just the beginning: As existing models face their next refresh, I fully expect to see live preview become the de facto standard for digital SLRs as well. And as live preview becomes more commonplace on SLRs, it will ease the transition for users moving from a point-and-shoot to an SLR--and it will bring one of the benefits of a point-and-shoot camera squarely into the SLR space.

Although consumers will purchase the majority of midrange models such as the Canon 40D and Nikon D300, these offerings hold clear appeal for professional shooters, too. The 40D and the D300 share a surprising number of commonalities with their bigger professional-grade cousins, the Canon EOS-1D Mark III and the Nikon D3, respectively.

The Canon 40D and EOS-1D Mark III share such features as a 3-inch, live-preview, 230,000-pixel LCD; a DIGIC III image processor; highlight tone priority; dust reduction; and similar menus and controls. The Nikon D300 and D3 share a slew of attributes, including the live-preview LCD screen; 3D Focus Tracking, a 51-point auto-focus system; various in-camera controls (Scene Recognition System, Picture Control System, Active D-Lighting); and dust reduction.

The advantage to adding such features to a midrange camera is multifold. No one stays a beginner forever; having more built-in pro-level features means you don't have to stay penned into a box, and you gain a more powerful creative tool. Plus, more-advanced photographers, like myself, can ratchet down to a more walkabout digital SLR without needing to make as many compromises in how we shoot as we once might have. (An EOS-1D Mark II is a wonderful tool, but not something I enjoy carrying with me on a day out in Tokyo.)

Everyone agrees that the advent of digital has changed the landscape of photography and how individuals regard their cameras. Buying a camera is now more like buying a computer: "With digital, now you have to upgrade every few years to stay on top of the technology," says Haueter. "That's unlike film, where you could buy a camera and then have it for decades."

Usually cameras are on the shooting side of the fashion runway, but today in Las Vegas, as the Photo Marketers Association Conference begins, the cameras are taking center stage.

What are the standouts? DSLR cameras that give camera buyers who want to go beyond just point-and-shoot are practically raining on the show. But here's a secret, it's the mid-priced cameras that are getting more professional without the bulk. Features like with HD-quality images and the ability to shoot in low light with long zooms are becoming under-$300 items. Even the entry-level cameras are packed with new features like high-speed burst mode.

New features that make the camera hyper-aware of its surroundings include face and smile detection, and get this… blink detection. Another breakthrough is geocoding—the camera's ability to know, not just when (date), but where (GPS coordinates) you took the shot. This is one of the most innovative years in camera features sets since automatic scene selection.

Meet the DSLRs and their little cousins

There's a blurring line between high-end point-and-shoot cameras and DSLRs, but typically DSLRs look much more like traditional film cameras and have interchangeable lenses. They are faster at starting up and focusing, and much better at taking pictures in low-light conditions. They're also larger, heavier, and more expensive.

Pentax and Sony both have new DSLR cameras. The top of the line Pentax K20D offers 14.6 megapixels and uses a CMOS sensor, which is said to be more sensitive to light than the alternative CCD sensor. Sony announced its DSLR-a200, an easier to use entry-level DSLR with a 10-megapixel sensor and compatibility with the full line of Minolta accessories. Canon's Rebel, one of the best-selling DSLRs, has a new generation called the 450D Digital Rebel XSi, featuring a 12.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, a 3-inch LCD, and great wide-angle shooting.

The Fujifilm FinePix S100FS is shaping up as a great alternative for those who want telephoto capabilities. It's got an 11-megapixel Super CCD sensor and a new lens that goes from 28mm to 400mm (based on a 35mm equivalent). In keeping with that theme, Olympus is unveiling what it claims is the world's first digital compact camera with whopping 20x optical zoom. The Olympus 10-megapixel SP-570 UZ is compact, but has DSLR-like features. Kodak also announced its compact high-zoom camera with image stabilization. The Z1012 IS, a 10 megapixel camera with a 12x optical zoom, claims the fastest click to capture of any camera, plus it automatically adjusts for scene detection so you don't have to futz with adjusting for backlighting and other hazards of getting the shot. This article is about photographic lenses for single-lens reflex film cameras (SLRs) and digital single-lens reflex cameras (DSLRs). Furthermore, the emphasis is on modern lenses for 35 mm film SLRs and for DSLRs with sensor sizes less than or equal to 35 mm ("full-frame").

A collection of lenses a DSLR owner might have. These are three Olympus zooms (40-150 mm, 11-22 mm and 14-54 mm) and a Sigma prime (30 mm), all for the Four Thirds System.

Interchangeable lenses

The major advantage of SLR and DSLR cameras is the possibility of changing lenses, to select the best lens for the current photographic need, and to allow the attachment of specialized lenses. Film SLR cameras have existed since the late 1950s, and over the years a very large number of different lenses have been produced, both by camera manufacturers (who typically only make lenses intended for their own camera bodies) and by third-party optics companies who may make lenses for several different camera lines.

DSLRs became available around the mid-1990s, and have become extremely popular in recent years. Some manufacturers, for example Minolta, Canon and Nikon, chose to make their DSLRs 100% compatible with their existing SLR lenses in the beginning, allowing owners of new DSLR's to continue to use their existing lenses and get a longer lifespan from their investment. Others, for example Olympus, chose to create a completely new lens mount and series of lenses for their DSLRs.

As implied by the above, lenses are only interchangeable within the "mount system" for which they are built. It is not possible (at least not without an adapter) to mount, for example, a Pentax lens on a Sony camera body.

Number of elements

The complexity of a lens—the number of elements and their degree of asphericity—depends upon the angle of view and the maximum aperture, among other variables including intended price point. An extreme wideangle lens of large aperture must be of very complex construction to correct for optical aberrations, which are worse at the edge of the field and when the edge of a large lens is used for image-forming. A long-focus lens of small aperture can be of very simple construction to attain comparable image quality; a doublet (with two elements) will often suffice. Some older cameras were fitted with "convertible" lenses of normal focal length; the front element could be unscrewed, leaving a lens of twice the focal length and angle of view, and half the aperture. The simpler half-lens was of adequate quality for the narrow angle of view and small relative aperture. Obviously the bellows had to extend to twice the normal length. Good-quality lenses with maximum aperture no greater than f/2.8 and fixed, normal, focal length need at least three (triplet) or four elements (the trade name "Tessar" derives from the Greek tessera, meaning "four"). The widest-range zooms often have fifteen or more. The reflection of light at each of the many interfaces between different optical media (air, glass, plastic) seriously degraded the contrast and color saturation of early lenses, zoom lenses in particular, especially where the lens was directly illuminated by a light source. The two main optical parameters of a photographic lens are the maximum aperture and the focal length. The focal length determines the angle of view, and the size of the image relative to that of the object, while the maximum aperture limits the brightness of the image and the fastest shutter speed usable. A popular third consideration is close focusing distance.

The maximum usable aperture of a lens is usually specified as the focal ratio or f-number, which is equal to the focal length divided by the effective aperture (or entrance pupil) diameter in the same units. The lower the number, the more light per unit area is delivered to the focal plane. Larger apertures (smaller f-numbers) provide a much shallower depth of field than smaller apertures, other conditions being equal. Practical lens assemblies may also contain mechanisms to deal with measuring light, secondary apertures for flare reduction, [3]and mechanisms to hold the aperture open until the instant of exposure to allow SLR cameras to focus with a brighter image with shallower depth of field, theoretically allowing better focus accuracy.

Focal lengths are usually specified in millimetres (mm), but older lenses marked in centimetres (cm) and inches are still to be found. For a given film or sensor size, specified by the length of the diagonal, a lens may be classified as

Normal lens: angle of view of the diagonal about 50° and a focal length approximately equal to the diagonal produces this angle.
Macro lens: angle of view narrower than 25° and focal length longer than normal. These lenses are used for close-ups, e.g., for images of the same size as the object. They usually feature a flat field as well, which means that the subject plane is exactly parallel with the film plane.
Wide-angle lens: angle of view wider than 60° and focal length shorter than normal.
Telephoto lens or long-focus lens: angle of view narrower and focal length longer than normal. A distinction is sometimes made between a long-focus lens and a true telephoto lens: the telephoto lens uses a telephoto group to be physically shorter than its focal length.

The 35mm film format is so prevalent that a 90mm lens, for example, is sometimes assumed to be a moderate telephoto; but for the 7×5cm format it is normal, while on the large 5×4 inch format it is a wide-angle. In general, the smaller the film or sensor surface, the smaller the angle of view. This can be corrected with lenses with shorter focal lengths.

A side effect of using lenses of different focal lengths is the different distances from which a subject can be framed, resulting in a different perspective. Photographs can be taken of a person stretching out a hand with a wideangle, a normal lens, and a telephoto, which contain exactly the same image size by changing the distance from the subject. But the perspective will be different. With the wideangle, the hands will be exaggeratedly large relative to the head. As the focal length increases, the emphasis on the outstretched hand decreases. However, if pictures are taken from the same distance, and enlarged and cropped to contain the same view, the pictures will have identical perspective. A moderate long-focus (telephoto) lens is often recommended for portraiture because the perspective corresponding to the longer shooting distance is considered to look more flattering.

It's very important to have proper sources of lights for getting best photographs. Almost every camera comes with in-built flash. But for being a professional photographer, you need an advanced camera with advanced features and useful controls. These cameras use additional flash for better lighting arrangements. Professional flashes used in these expensive photography equipments have manual controls and are outside of the unit, providing much more light with much better controls. Flashes are mostly used indoors as the main source of light when the area is too dark to get quality photographs.

Red Eye Reduction Feature

"Red eye" is one of the most commonly mentioned complaints in regards to built-in camera flashes of point-and-shoot cameras. Having all the people in your images with vampire-like red glowing eyes is not pretty for any subject, however this is one of the most difficult challenges the flash has to offer. The problem comes from the fact that the eye retina mirrors the red light from the flash right back at the camera. So the problem is essentially not really camera's fault. Some cameras have a "red eye reduction" software or even features that emits a few pre flash light flashes that aim to get the iris of the eye to contract by the time the main flash comes the chance of the red eye effect appearing is reduced.

Shooting Basics to Minimize Red Eye

Professional flash units usually don't have such big problems with red eyes. Using the built-in camera flash can result people in photos looking extremely bad, ruining an image completely. The shadows cast by the flash can make the subject of the picture look very harsh. To lower these effects try to take your photos against a dark background, or even better in the middle of a room with no set background at all. If you take your photos against a white wall the in-built flash will not be able to provide results you want. More serious flash units are able to tilt in different directions.
